Five private group companies have signed a cooperation agreement with the state-run MRTV to operate as content providers for digital free-to-air TV channels in a multi-playout system of MRTV. A broadcasting council will be formed following the amendment of the broadcasting law and related rules. 5 privately-run Myanmar companies will start television broadcasting as early as this year in a major step toward the democratization of the country’s media. It is unclear whether five new broadcasters will succeed commercially. Initial investment, including rental fees for MRTV facilities, is over $4 million. They plan to recoup their investment through selling TV commercials, but will likely face difficulties for the foreseeable future due to the limited advertising market in Myanmar. Myanmar now has five TV channels — MRTV, Myawaddy, MRTV-4, Channel-7 and Sky Net as well as six FM lines broadcasting from Myanmar Radio.
